About Contractor Markup Calc
Contractor Markup Calc is a free tool that does one job and does it properly: Enter your costs and the profit you want, and this works out the price to quote. It always shows the markup and the margin together, because they are different numbers and treating them as the same is the most expensive arithmetic mistake in contracting.
Why this exists
Most tools covering this calculation are buried inside a larger site, wrapped in sign-up prompts, or so slow with advertising that the answer takes longer to load than it does to work out by hand. This page loads in well under a second, works on a phone, needs no account, and gives the full working rather than a single unexplained number.
How the numbers are produced
The arithmetic runs entirely in your browser. Nothing you type is sent to a server or recorded. You can read the source of the calculation by viewing the page source, and you are welcome to check it against your own figures.
Accuracy and limits
The calculator implements the standard published method described on the main page. It is intended for planning and estimation. It cannot know the specifics of your situation, and it is not a substitute for advice from a qualified professional where one is warranted. Where a figure depends on a rate, a rule or a published table that changes over time, the page states the version used.
